Early intervention center for children withhearing impairment, established in the year 2001, has the main objective of identification and intervention of young children with hearing impairment at an early stage. Hearing loss is one of the most common major abnormalities present at birth and, if undetected, will impair speech, language and cognitive development. The prevalence of high risk babies with hearing loss is estimated at 2 to 4 per 100 infant in the intensive care unit. The critical period for language and speech development is generally regarded as the first 3 years of life. Children who are identified with hearing loss between birth and 6 months of age and have received immediate intervention (amplification, medical referral, family-centered programs etc) have significantly higher developmental functions as compared to those with late detection and intervention.

Audiologists and speech language therapists are working in the unit. This unit helped in the early identification of the children having hearing impairment. The children are prepared for inclusive education. As and when they are ready for preschool they leave the unit. New children will join.
