The Institute of Special Education was established in the year Pediatrician is the first person, whom the parents of special children, usually meet.Being a pediatrician, the founder chairman, Dr. P.HanumanthaRao, felt the need to start a special school for the special children as no such schools were found in Secunderabad. It was the beginning of the HSS leading to Special School for the Deaf, finally the formation of the Institute of Special Education: the seed is grown and started bearing fruits. ISE started with the teachers’ Training Course for the Deaf in 1996 with the financial support of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment which continued till 2016 -17 Academic Programmes

Regular Courses
M.Ed. in Special Education (Mental Retardation) – M.Ed.Spl.Ed.(MR)&M.Ed. in Special Education (Hearing Impairment) – M.Ed.Spl.Ed.(HI)
It is a two year course (4 semesters) which prepares the students to become master educators. The majorsubjects included in the courses are special education,psychology, curriculum development and research methodology. The students are required to gain teaching skills and submit a dissertation prepared based on educational research methodology. SARS conducts these courses in Mental Retardation&Hearing Impairment. The intake is 15 per year for each specialization.M.Ed.Spl.Ed.(MR) is a globally recognized course.
B.Ed. in Special Education (Mental Retardation) – B.Ed.Spl.Ed.(MR) &B.Ed. in Special Education (Hearing Impairment) – B.Ed.Spl.Ed.( HI)
It is a two years course (4 semesters) which prepares the students to be special educators in special schools and inclusive education. The courses have 60%practical and 40 percent theory.
The students are exposed to one main disability and 2 optional disabilities. Methodology of teaching is also introduced in general and special education through individualized education and group teaching. The students are required to gain skills to teach children with disabilities based on the types of disabilities selected by the trainees. SARS conducts these courses in Mental Retardationand Hearing Impairment. The intake capacity is 30 per year for each specialization. B.Ed.Spl.Ed.(MR) is a globally recognized course.
Diploma in Special Education: Hearing Impairment: D.Ed.Spl Ed.(HI)
It is a 2 two years, 4 semesters course to train the students to become special educators to teach the children with hearing impairment in special schools and inclusive education. The course includes 40 percent theory and 60 percent practical. The trainees gain skills to teach children with hearing impairment by using technology and developing teaching learning materials.The intake capacity is 25 per year. The exam is conducted by the National Institute for the Hearing Impairment, Mumbai and recognized by RCI.
Diploma in Special Education: Autism Spectrum Disorders: D.Ed.Spl.Ed. (ASD)
It is a 2 two years, non semester course to train the students to become special educators to teach the children with ASD in special schools and inclusive education. The course includes 40 percent theory and 60 percent practical. The trainees gain skills to teach children with ASD by using latest strategies and developing teaching learning materials.The intake capacity is 25 per year. The exam is conducted by the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities, Chennai and recognized by RCI.
Diploma in Early Childhood Special Education: D.E.C.S.E. (MR)
It is a one year, non semester course to train the students to become special educators to teach the children with delayed milestones in preschools and early intervention unit. The course includes 40 percent theory and 60 percent practical. The trainees gain skills to teach special children below 7 years by using latest strategies and developing teaching learning materials.The intake capacity is 25 per year. The exam is conducted by the National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped, Secunderabad and recognized by RCI.
Distance Courses:
B.Ed. in Special Education (Mental Retardationb) – B.Ed.Spl.Ed.(MR)&B.Ed. in Special Education (Hearing Impairment) – B.Ed.Spl.Ed.( HI)
It is a 5 semesters (2 and a half years) course conducted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University. SARS is a study centre from 2011 onwards. The same syllabus used for regular course, recognized by RCI, is followed in these courses. These courses are equivalent to the regular courses.
Extension Services
- As a part of extension of services we conducted free screening camp to identify children with disabilities and learning problems at Govt. Primary Boys School, Ghasmandi, Secunderabad and at AmanVedika Home, Secunderabad. In the screening program the following children are identified with learning problems. Remedial education programs are yet to be started in the same schools.
- Free Medical and Disability Detection Camps are conducted in each zone of city of Hyderabad and in nearby areas in all the campuses, a team of Medical doctors, Psychologists, Speech Therapists, Physiotherapists and Special Educators participate in the camp.
Free Screening camps are regularly conducted in Creches, Play Schools, Primary Schools, Middle and High Schools to detect invisible disabilities at the early stage which helps to arrest the disability and helps to reduce the disability and further more to create awareness in the public about disability, facilities and treatment available.
