Sensory Integration therapy is the mainstream clinical approach to treat sensory integration disorder by including a series of sensory and motor skills exercises. In short, sensory integration is the ability to capture information through the senses and meaningfully process that data in human mind. Children with development delays, Autism & ADHD ( may have hypo or hyper sensitivity) are given therapies in the Sensory Integration Unit at Sensory Park.
Children require such therapy because they have a dysfunctional sensory integration system, where one of more of the senses overreact or under react to environmental stimuli. Mainly the treatment focuses on:
(i) tacile (sense of touch)
(ii) vestibular (sense of movement)
(iii) proprioceptive (sense of body position).
SIT is often inherited, and are coded into the child’s genetic material. Prenatal and birth complications have been implicated and environmental factors may be involved. Child with Sensory Integration therapy often have problems with motor skills and other abilities required for school success and childhood accomplishments. It put child at high risk for many emotional, social and emotional problems.
Occupational therapy with a sensory integration approach typically takes place in sensory-rich environment called as a sensory gym. During the session, the therapist guides the child through fun activities that are subtly structured so the child is constantly challenged but always successful. The main goal of Occupational Therapy is to accelerate appropriate responses to sensation in an active, meaningful and fun way so that child behaves in functional way.
An occupational therapist evaluates the child for sensory defensiveness and sensory cravings using a battery of tests. Sensory integration is an ongoing forensic analysis of each child. Treatment usually takes place in a setting outfitted with specialized equipment, and same therapy can be used to treat different types of issues.
