Behaviour issues

Behavioural therapy is an action-based therapy that looks to foster positive behaviour change. This form of therapy seeks to recognize and help modify potentially destructive or unhealthy behaviours. It works on the idea that all behaviours are learned and that unhealthy behaviours can be changed. In Behavioural therapy behavioural changes are brought through the systematic use of differential reinforcement based on behavioural learning principles.

The focus of treatment is often on current problems and how to change them. Behavioural therapy can benefit people with behavioural problems or mental health conditions that involve unwanted behaviour such as obsessive- Compulsive disorder (OCD), attention- deficit/hyperactive disorder (ADHD), anxiety, phobias and addiction.

Here in Sweekar, we look at all the environmental factors that support the destructive behaviours in order to understand the client’s difficulties and try replacing the unwanted behaviour with more positive ones. Our therapists are specialized in techniques such as
Relaxation training
Systematic desensitization
Virtual reality exposure
Exposure and response prevention techniques
Social skills training
Modelling
Behavioural rehearsal
Aversion therapy

Behaviour modification is a treatment approach which is focused on changing maladaptive behaviour. This method is based on the work of B.F. Skinner, a well-known psychologist who developed the operant conditioning theory — which suggests that behaviour can be modified by consequences and through reinforcement. The major goal of behaviour modification is to replace undesirable behaviours with acceptable ones. An underlying theme is the belief that how people react to an object or event can be modified by learning. This technique can be used in all age groups, and can be applied to a wide range of settings.

Children with variety of behavioural problems such as ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and Intellectual Disability are brought to Sweekaar. Here in Sweekaar we do the detailed assessment of the child based on the presented complaints and plan for behaviour modification for the target behaviour (undesired behaviour in the child). The key behaviour techniques used for behaviour modification are:

1.Token economy
2.Response cost
3.Time-out
4.Extinction
5.Negative and positive reinforcement
6.Negative and positive punishment
7.Attention enhancement training
