Newborn screening is a safe practice of testing a newborn for specific harmful or potentially fatal disorders, which are not otherwise apparent at birth. There are some metabolic disorders that interferes with body’s consumption of nutrients to maintain health issues and produce energy. If baby is born in a hospital, the medical staff will do the baby’s hearing and heart screening. They will also draw blood to perform other test by the time you leave. Your doctor will call and let you know if results show any concern. If you deliver baby at home, take the child to Sweekar to get the screening done.
Newborn screening is critical yet important for the child to receive treatment, which sometimes may be life saving. However, there are disorders which can be detected but cannot be treated. If any medical centre does not perform newborn screening, parents can have tests done at Sweekaar or any other large medical centers. Some private labs also offer newborn screening.
Newborn screening are done using following methods- blood test, in which a few drops of blood are taken from the child’s heel and sent to lab for analysis. Second one is hearing test where a health care provider will place a small earpiece or microphone in the infant’s ear. Or electrodes are put on child’s head while baby is quiet or asleep. Newborn screening is done not to diagnose illness, instead it shows which baby needs more testing to confirm any illness. In case, follow-up test confirms, treatment can be started before symptoms appear. It is used to detect various disorders such as Amino Acid metabolism disorders, Biotinidase deficiency, Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Congenital hypothyroidism, Cystic Fibrosis, Fatty acid metabolism disorders, Galactosemia, and more.
